About Us

Arsha Vidya Gurukulam (Under the auspices of Arsha Vidya Pitham) is an institute for the traditional study of Advaita Vedanta, Sanskrit, Yoga, Ayurveda, astrology, and other classical Indian disciplines.
Arsha Vidya Gurukulam is an institute for the traditional study of Advaita Vedanta, Sanskrit, Yoga, Ayurveda, astrology, and other classical Indian disciplines. The word Arsha means that which is from the Rishis - the great sages of ancient India. The word Vidya means knowledge. Gurukulam refers to a residential center for learning with the teacher. Thus, Arsha Vidya Gurukulam is a place where one learns the knowledge imparted by the Rishis.
Established in 1986 by Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the Gurukulam is patterned after the ancient gurukulams of India. The Gurukulam offers Indians and Westerners alike an opportunity to study the profound spiritual knowledge of the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Brahmasutras, and other classical Vedic texts in English in the USA.
Located on 14 acres in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, a serene setting in the Pocono Mountains, the Gurukulam offers short- and long-term programs of study for guest and resident students of all ages. The campus is adorned by a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Dakshinamurti, considered the first teacher of Vedic knowledge. Apart from Vedanta, classes on Sanskrit, Vedic chanting, Vedic astrology, Ayurveda, meditation and Iyengar Yoga are also offered. There are ongoing meditation and Vedanta classes on weekends which anyone can attend without prior registration.
The Gurukulam also publishes many books on various topics in Vedanta, including a Bhagavad Gita Home Study course and a Vedic Heritage Teaching Program for children. The Arsha Vidya bookstore has over 7000 publications on Vedanta, Hinduism, Sanskrit, Yoga, astrology, Ayurveda, philosophy and Indian history. Funding comes in the form of donations from people who value the Gurukulam’s offerings. Additional funds comes from books sales.

Sanskrit Self Study Course

Knowledge of Sanskrit is the key to the ancient religious and secular literature of India, as well as to the Indian system of medicine, mathematics, architecture, sculpture, music, and art. For a student of Vedanta, the study of this classical language is a way to sharpen the mind and prepare it to delve into the scriptures.
The Sanskrit Self Study Course is designed to enable a student to proceed at his/her own pace without the presence of a teacher. The course consists of twelve and a half hours of instruction on nine audio cassettes and a comprehensive text book with a glossary of grammatical terms - English to Sanskrit and Sanskrit to English, a dictionary of the vocabulary used in the book, and an answer key.
Preparation for the Study of Panini
A complete description of Sanskrit grammar including the rules describing the formation of finite verbs and words from verbal roots, the formation of compounds, the use of primary and secondary affixes, governing rules and Vedic usage was formalized by Panini. Panini's work resembles a highly sophisticated, elegant, and powerful computer program. This "program" was evolved at least 20 centuries ago.
The Sanskrit Self Study Course provides one with the background necessary to begin the study of the Paninian system of grammar. The course provides a highly structured method of learning Sanskrit so that a student can gain a mechanistic insight into the language. This kind of analytical approach prepares the student for the study of Vedanta including the Upanishads and Gita and the commentaries written on them.

Vedic Heritage Teaching Program

The Vedic Heritage Teaching program is a guide for families and communities that wish to teach the Vedic heritage to their children in an authentic and systematic manner. The subject matter has been organized into three volumes, tailored to the ages of the children.
The first volume addresses children of ages six to eight years and offers teaching material for a three-year program. The second volume for children of ages nine to twelve extends the learning by introducing the forms of Isvara and the spirit of Vedic culture. The third and final volume for children between thirteen and fifteen years of age includes the significance of Hindu samskaras, and provides an introduction to the Bhagavad Gita. It also addresses some social and cultural issues through the Vedic vision.
Teaching this program will be a blessing to oneself and to the community if one has the attitude of a seeker and discovers the skill to communicate.
The immigrant community from India have channeled much energy into building temples and community centers in the west. These centers fulfill a need for cultural identity and offer a place for worship, religious and cultural celebrations, and social events. Although these centers preserve the forms of the Vedic tradition, the spirit which breathes wisdom into these forms can be imbibed only through an appreciation of the sruti and smriti literature.
The homeland of any people provides an infrastructure in its society to hand down culture from generation to generation. The first-generation Indian immigrants, having grown up in India, naturally imbibed the culture of their homeland. In addition, the joint family structure provided them with inspiration and stability at home through relatives who lived pious lives.
For second generation Indian children, born into a different culture, the dynamics of understanding and growing as a part of their heritage have changed drastically. For them, the home is composed of a nuclear family wherein parental responsibilities are diverse. Western society, too, offers many alternative beliefs and ways of living. Given this situation, teaching the Vedic heritage to children emerges as an essential part of life in an immigrant Indian family or community.
The program, developed and written by Sunita Ramaswamy and Dr. Sundar Ramaswamy, can be purchased from our online bookstore or by calling our bookstore at (570) 992 2339 ext. 567.

Bhagavad Gita Home Study Course

"In the Gita find you will yourself;
The self hitherto unknown but sought after,
The self that is strangely missed and searched for,
The self that you love to be,
That you are."

-- Swami Dayananda
The Bhagavad Gita Home Study Course has been designed and taught by Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati. Each of the 700 verses of the Gita is presented in the devanagiri script with transliteration, word-for-word meaning, and an English transliteration. Swamiji has provided extensive commentary in keeping with the traditional commentary of Adi Sankara. Based on the classes taught by Swamiji to students attending the three year resident course at the gurukulam, the Gita Home Study Program offers a methodical and comprehensive program of self study.
