Pt. Jagdis Maharaj

Sarvadeo Mandir was founded by the late Pundit Jagdis Maharaj of Sister's Road, Busy Corner, Princes Town, Trinidad and the former Spiritual Leader Pundit Deodath Simbhoonarine Mooklal Maharaj.in the year 1965.

It is a place where devotees from all over regardless of race, color, creed or orientation can come together in peace, for the purpose of worship, socialization, meditation and spirituality.

in the year 1998 a branch of the Sarvadeo Mandir was opened in 114-04 Jamaica Avenue, New York, U.S.A. by the grand son of thr late Pundits Jagdis and  Mooklal Maharaj, the son the late Pundit Deodath S.M. Maharaj.

At Sarvadeo Mandir, worship is conducted according to the stipulations of Sanatan Dharma [ Hindu Faith] and devotees are welcome from all walks of life, to join with us in devotion and spirituality.
Pundit Anand Maharaj has been a Pundit in the Hindu Denomination for over
thirty (30) years. He has undergone both extensive and intensive religious training in Hindu Priesthood and the Rituals of the Hindu Faith in preparation for his appointment to the office of Pundit. Pundit Anand Maharaj training took the form of several courses and seminars on the Doctrine and Practices of the Hindu Faith sponsored by various affiliated Hindu Institutions, this was confirmed by us with the S.D.M.S. of Trinidad and Tobago, which is the Licensing authority for Pundits in the West Indies.

Pundit Anand is qualified to perform the duties of a Pundit by virtue of several religious educational courses he has completed. Pundit Anand was initiated into the Priest life at the age of five (5) years and had advanced to a Bhramhachari at the age of ten (10).
With continuous study in Rituals, Samskars and Priesthood under the guidance of his Guru and other Pundits, Pundit Anand was promoted to Prohit  in the year 1982.

In the pursuit of an academic qualification and a great desire to observe rituals by Pundits in India, Pundit Anand Maharaj then traveled to continue his study in India. Upon his return to Trinidad Pundit Anand continued his studies as a Priest for another three (3) years  and was Ordained Pundit in 1988 by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha of Trinidad and Tobago.
In the year 1988 Pundit Anand was appointed as Pundit at the Sanatan Seva Sang Mandir in Princes Town, Trinidad, where he served for ten (10) years. During those ten years Pundit Anand Maharaj continued his studies and after the successful completion of the courses “Hindi” “Sanskrit” and “Philosophy” was granted a Certificate by the Kaywalyadham of Trinidad in 1990. He also completed several courses, and workshops, in preparation for the great work of preaching the Holy Books and Pundit Anand Maharaj was awarded a Certificate Of Competency, after the completion of the study of “Karmkand”(rituals) and “Purohit-Karma” (Priesthood) in September 1994, by the U.S.A. Pandits Parishad Inc. located at 87-56 Place, Jamaica New York 11432.
On February 22 1995 Pundit Anand Maharaj was licensed to perform marriages in his native Trinidad and Tobago.
To suit the need of his duties, Pundit Anand Maharaj was required to complete courses of study in Teachers Training and upon successful completion of “Practical Teaching”, “Psychology and Sociology”, “Family Life Education”, “Principles and Practice of Education”, “Physical Education” and “Music” Pundit Anand Maharaj was awarded a Teachers Diploma in 1995 by the Ministry of Education in Trinidad and Tobago.
In the year 1998 Pundit Anand Maharaj entered the Sarvadeo Mandir USA and was appointed position as Pundit since January 1999. Additionally Pundit Anand is authorized by New York to solemnize marriages.

History

The India Cultural Foundation (ICF) which is also popularly called by the members as the "Hindu Temple of Oklahoma" was incorporated and established as a non profit organization in 1982 to cater to the religious and spiritual needs of the Hindu community.
Five families donated 10 acres of land in the year 1984 close to I-44/I-35 at Wilshire Boulevard which is easily accessible for devotees living within Oklahoma City metropolitan area and in surrounding states. With generous contributions made by the devotees a 4000sq.ft building was completed in August 1989 with the street address as 7200 N.Coltrane Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73121.
The devotees have decided to have Lord Balaji (Sri Venkateswara Swamy) as the main deity, brought the shilpies (Stone Carvers) from India in the year 1994 and built the five Temples (Sactum Sanctorums) for the deities Balaji, Ganesha, Shiva, Ram Parivar and Radha Krishna.
During the year 1997, ICF acquired 5.11 acres of adjoining land to the north side of the Temple. During the year 1998, a private 6 water line tapped to Oklahoma City water line at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Coltrane Road was installed and brought the city water to ICF site and a fire hydrant was installed in front of the then building. Having fire protection at the site allowed for any new construction without having to build a water storage tank at the site.

Temple Expansion and Renovation and The Rajagopuram (Tapered Dome at Main Entrance)

Temple renovation and expansion project was completed in May 2004 and a grand re-opening ceremony was celebrated on 2 May, 2004. Existing building was completely renovated with new roof, new heating/cooling systems, new lighting, new fire sprinkler systems, etc. and demolished restrooms in order to comply with the Agama Sastra. An additional space of 6500sq.ft of new construction consisting of the main building expansion, kitchen, restrooms, class room including the construction of the concrete structure for the Rajagopuram (tapered dome at the main entrance), foundation for Sri Mahalakshmi and Sri Hanuman temples, special exhaust system for performing homam and new parking lot with 165 parking spaces.
The total cost of this project was 1.6 million dollars with $650,000 borrowed from bank. The generous contributions made by our members during years 2005, 2006 and also by using the funds set aside as rainy day fund ($100,000) to pay off the principle on the loan made it possible to reduce the temple debt to $75,000 as of April 2007.

List of Gopurams (Tapered domes), Temples (Sanctum Sanctorums) and other Artwork to be Completed by Shilpies (Stone Carvers) from India

1. Rajagopuram (tapered dome at the main entrance)
2. Vimana Gopuram (dome above the main Sanctum Sanctorum of Lord Balaji)
3. Two Temples (Sanctum Sanctorums), one each for Sri Mahalakshmi and Sri Hanumanji
4. Temple for Navagraha
5. Decoration with holy figures and artwork of all pillars (steel columns) in the prayer hall
6. Decoration with holy figures and artwork of the partial wall between deity area hall and the newly extended hall and also the main entrance
The Hindu Temple of Oklahoma serves the religious needs of about 1500 families in Oklahoma City and surrounding areas. These Hindu families are eagerly waiting for the shilpies (Stone Carvers) from India to come and complete the decorative artwork for the sanctum sanctorums and the tapered domes in accordance with ancient Hindu Shilpa and Agama Shastras (Science of Temple Construction) so that it can become a fully completed temple as per ancient scriptures.
THE HINDU TEMPLE OF OKLAHOMA CITY continues to stand as a SYMBOL OF HINDU HERITAGE in NORTH AMERICA.

Balavikas Program

Introduction

The Balavikas program was initiated by Dr. Vijaya Malpani in 1995. In the last decade the program has grown and developed rapidly and today there are over 110 children who derive both spiritual knowledge and gain the cultural experiences of our heritage.

Objective

The objective of the Balavikas program is to teach the children the Hindu epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata; to instruct them in Omkaram, Hindu traditions, the significance of Hindu gods, Hindu prayers and its meanings, yoga, and bhajans; to participate in traditional Indian dramas; to inculcate in them a sense of service toward their elders and the community they live in.

Guidelines and Rules

Children must be enrolled prior to starting Balavikas classes.
A personal check of $50.00 must be paid before every semester to the Hindu temple of Oklahoma.
Parents who are enrolling their children for the first time have the option of either enrolling at the beginning of each semester or in the middle of the school year.
Parents will be responsible to help their child/children to catch up with all the chapters they have missed if they chose the latter option.
The Balavikas program follows the school year from September to May, which includes a fall and a spring semester. The program also incorporates a summer semester.
Children must be dressed modestly and appropriately. Please ensure that the girls are dressed comfortably since they will be practicing yoga. We prefer the girls not to wear shorts.
Parents need to ensure that their child/children have their folders for their Balavikas lessons.
Parents are not allowed in the classroom without the prior permission of the teacher.
Absolutely no running and yelling by the children in front of the altar of the temple.
Parents are expected to teach their child/children that the temple is a place of worship and not a playground.
The quarterly service projects are part of the Balavikas curriculum. All the children and their parents are expected to participate.
Parents must read or discuss a chapter with their child/children before each lesson.
There will be a year end quiz in May.
The Balavikas program is a team effort that involves the teacher, the child and the parent. Therefore all parents are encouraged to take an active interest in their childs/childrens lessons and activities.

Objectives

The objective of the Balavikas Youth Group is to provide young Indian-American teenagers growing up in Oklahoma with a deeper sense of their heritage and religion. It builds on the basic concepts of Hinduism that they are likely to be familiar with, either through formal classes such as Balavikas at the temple, or in more informal settings by interacting with family and friends. The classes are conducted in an interactive way that promotes dialog and discussion.
