Founder-Acarya of ISKCON

The Founder-Acarya of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) is His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada travelled to America in 1965, and after converting many Americans to become devotees of Lord Krishna, he then sent them around the world to establish the Movement of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. One of the places that he sent his devotees was Australia and Srila Prabhupada writes in a letter of 1972 to Upendra das who established the Temple in Brisbane that he was very pleased with Upendra's efforts in establishing a Temple in this City. By sticking closely to the instructions and the example set by Shrila Prabhupada we can continue to be in close contact with his inspiration and guidance. This comes in many forms, especially through his devoted servants and disciples.

In the Brisbane Temple room we have a life size murti form of Shrila Prabhupada, and we offer worship daily to Shrila Prabhupada in this way. Through this activity the whole community becomes galvanized around the central point of Shrila Prabhupada's teachings on how to become Krishna Conscious and how to render pure devotional service.

Our philosophy
he philosophy of the Krishna Consciousness Movement is based primarily on the Vaisnava Scriptures - the Bhagavad-Gita Srimad Bhagavatam and Chaitanya-Caritamrta. In the Bhagavad-Gita Lord Krishna explains:
dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
(Bhagavad-Gita 2.13)
The Krishna Consciousness Movement is teaching the world that we are all eternal spiritual beings - part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godheadhead - Lord Sri Krishna and that it is our constitutional position to render service to the Lord. Shrila Prabhupada has therefore set up this International Society for Krishna Consciousness specifically for the purpose of facilitating the souls to perform pure devotional service to Lord Krishna and to associate with other devotees of the Lord.

Chanting
Devotees from the Temple regularly go out on the street and perform Hari Nam Sankirtan. This is currently being done in the City every Saturday we will chant the Maha-Mantra for the upliftment of all Leaving from Govindas 99 Elizabeth St. @ 11:30am.

We will chant and dance and spread the Holy Names for an hour and return to Govinda's where lunch will be supplied for anyone who chants with great joy and enthusiasm.
Lord Chaitanya inaugurated the Sankirtan Movement in Navardwip West Bengal five hundred years ago. The devotees of ISKCON are continuing this tradition by taking to the streets with mrdangas and karatalas and chanting the Holy Name in congregation. Being the Yuga dharma this activity is supremely purifying for the whole atmosphere and also purifies the hearts of those devotees that join in the Hari Nam Sankirtan. One can feel the special mercy of Lord Chaitanya by taking to the treets and distributing this nectar of the Holy Names of the Lord.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

When the Hari Nam party takes to the streets many people join in and come and chant and dance with us. Hari Nam Sankirtan was one of the primary activities of the ISKCON Society that Shrila Prabhupada set up and it is still extremely important to the continued spiritual strength of our Movement.

Another aspect of chanting is japa or personal chanting on
beads and this all the devotees who live in the Temple do in the morning between 5 am and 7 am. The devotees take their japa mala beads which are 108 beads and they chant one mantra on each bead. One mantra of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare on each bead. They go round their mala and chant that mantra 108 times. Those who are initiated and have taken vows to chant 16 of these rounds of the Hare Krishna maha mantra every day. This chanting takes approximately two hours.

Come and join us to take advantage of
this wonderful festival

Bhakti meaning connecting with Lord Krsna through transcendental loving service. Loving service to Lord Krsna should be for His satisfaction and in accordance with the rules laid by Him. Srila Rupa Goswami, an expert in the taste of pure devotional service, who is very dear to Lord  Caitanya, has mentioned 64 prominent rules to be followed by those who wish to render devotional service.

Seva opportunities
Many opportunities available to render some service to Their Lordships Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai and Shrila Prabhupada. You may like to make garlands for Their Lordships, assist in preparation of a feast for the devotees, help in cleaning of the temple after Saturday programme, or plant flowers for the Lord's worship in the temple gardens. Some congregational members are now coming and regularly dressing Srila Prabhupada, which is a very intimate service (for this service devotees must be chanting 16 rounds and following the four principles of spiritual life).
There is one nice story where Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur was being asked some very high philosophical questions by a scholar. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta told him to go and ask the pujari because he was busy. The man thought that only Bhaktisiddhanta could answer his question because it was very difficult, but he went anyway to the pujari room. When he arrived the pujari was washing a plate from the Lord's offering, and he asked the scholar to please help him and he would answer the scholar's question after they had finished. Miraculously, the scholar found that as soon as he started to wash the plate in a humble mood of service to the Lord, all the answers to his questions came immediately into his mind and he did not even need to ask the pujari anything.

This is the wonderful potency of performing devotional service to Krishna, that we immediately make so much advancement towards spirtual perfection, just by rendering some simple service to the Lord. Srila Prabhupada explained that we can also render devotional service in our own homes, and that is very good, but just as the stock exchange is permeated with the mood of business, and therefore businessmen can easily do business t here, in the same way the temple is surcharged with a mood of devotion from all the devotional service going on there. Therefore it is especially recommended to regularly perform some devotional service at the temple.
Book distribution

Srila Prabhupada stressed book distribution as the most important activity to be undertaken by the members of his Society.
Srila Prabhupada received the instruction from his own spiritual master that if he ever got money he should somehow or other print books and that if he printed books in the English language it would benefit the people of the world and also benefit him. The devotees regularly distribute Shrila Prabhupada's books in various ways. Sometimes going out on the streets and selling the books to people and sometimes placing the books in libraries and sometimes holding bookstalls in different festivals and gatherings around the city.

There are many ways to distribute Shrila Prabhupada's books including buying a box of bulk books and distributing one each to work mates or business associates. Any kind of book distribution is extremely pleasing to Shrila Prabhupada and the previous acaryas because it is directly giving the science of Krishna Consciousness to the conditioned souls who so desperately need it.
If you would like to find out more about book distribution in Brisbane Temple you can contact

Leaving from Govindas 99 Elizabeth St. @ 7pm.
We will chant and dance and spread the Holy Names for an hour and return to Govinda's where lunch will be supplied for anyone who chants with great joy and enthusiasm.

"The singing and dancing of Hare Krsna is known as kirtan. This is not ordinary dancing: this is the dancing of the soul, a soul awakened to his original consciousness, Krishna consciousness. There is no motive in performing kirtana. It is the song and dance of ecstasy, the dance of the soul. " -
Srila A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Please contact either Vraj on 0400362588 or Dominic on 0478043193 if you have a question or suggestion about this program.

"We need grass roots revolution. That means YOU and ME.
