Bharatiya Mandir started as a dream in 1991 and finished as a reality in June 1993. When the houses were purchased, there were no funds on hand but with the moral and financial support of the devotees, and assistance from the National Bank of New Zealand, the committee was able to complete purchase of the properties at 252 and 254 Balmoral Road.

The Bharatiya Mandir is built at a site purified with blessing of vedic mantras recited by Saints and Acharyas. This epitome of love and worship will continue to inspire, improve, preserve and promote the Hindu way of life amongst the future generations of Hindus on this land.

A time capsule was established and placed on 20th September 1991(Shila Ropan Day) in the Bharatiya Mandir foundation along with the following letter with the wishes of completing the Construction of this Bharatiya Mandir within a short period.

Bhoomi Puja

Building of Bharatiya Mandir is the biggest tribute to all ancestors who, in spite of great difficulties preserved and murtured Hinduism through their total dedication and Bhakti in New Zealand.

The completion of such a big project looks like a miracle and it was

 Bharatiya Mandir, Auckland, New Zealand
indeed a miracle of almighty Lord who bless Shri Roshan Lal and Shri Rajinder Agnihotri to have the motivation and vision to build a   House of Lord  in Auckland.

Any person visiting Bharatiya Mandir will first feel proud and then amazed to see this great edifice of worship. The serenity, sanctity and peaceful environment will lead anyone to meditate.

The Bharatiya Mandir is built at a site purified with blessing of vedic mantras recited by Saints and Acharyas. This epitome of love and worship will continue to inspire, improve, preserve and promote the Hindu way of life amongst the future generations of Hindus on this land.

The Bharatiya Mandir Committee is fortunately led by people of great commitment, vision and planning. Their co-ordinated efforts and commitment involved the entire Hindu Community of New Zealand, specially of greater Auckland. They worked tirelessly to raise funds and spent long house in planning and completing this admirable project.

Everyone would like to know the Bharatiya Mandir Gatha. Yes Gatha because when we narrate a story of such noble world we call it a Gatha. This Gatha is a record of important events and the brief account of efforts and contribution of many prominent and other devotees of Himduism. This story should inspire our future generations; (who will have the responsibility of taking care of this epitome of Hindu culture and religion), to show the same sense of responsibility, dedication, commitment and reverence as their forefathers had in building this temple.

It was Sunday but a very special one on 29 th June 1986 when at a meeting of Auckland Indian Association at Gandhi hall it was announced that two residential properties at 252-254 Balmoral Road were identified by Shri Roshan Lal Nauhria. It was a matter of celebration and joy. Although, there was a place for social and cultural activities the Hindus did not have a proper temple. In the spirit of
Sanathan Dharam  it was approved by the committee to set up a separate committee to be known as Bharatiya Mandir Indian Temple Inc. this was made possible by initial contribution of $2000 each by Shri Roshan Nauhria, Dr. R. Agnihotri, Thakor prabhu and Dr. Kantilal N. Patel.

At the meeting late Shri Ramesh Bhai Patel, Shiv lala masters and Prabhu Kanji were appointed to further report on the suitability of these sites for the Mandir. These three person has been dedicated and committed as workers of the community. Unfortunately Shri Ramesh Bhai Patel passed away in 1989.

Late Ramesh bhai Patel has been working for the community since 1950. he also had very good knowledge of Hindu scriptures, rites and rituals. He was responsible for performing marriages and other rites for the community. His social work for the community was greatly commended and he was awarded MBE for his services, the highest award to any Indian to date in New Zealand.

Shivlal Bhukandas Masters also served the Indian Community for their religious needs. While he moved around many centers of New Zealand, he finally settled in Auckland and was also to provide leadership to establish the Bharatiya Mandir. He was awarded the Q.S.M for his service to the community.

Prabhu Kanji has been in Auckland since arriving from India. He has been a very active member within the Auckland Indian Association and Sports Club as well as helping to establish the Bharatiya Mandir.

These three gentlemen were the driving force to establish the Bharatiya Mandir. All of them were awarded the Life Membership of both Auckland and the New Zealand Indian Central Associations for their service to the community.

The effort of raising funds came in full swing after successfully obtaining Council Approval for the project. Special efforts were required as the project
s estimated cost was more than $1.85 million. Names were called for volunteers for raising funds and coordinating schemes to fully involve the entire Hindu community. Shri Mohan bhai Daya of Auckland made special efforts with the help from his friends and contacts and Sant Shri Morari Bapu was requested to pay a visit to New Zealand and give his discourses on Ram Katha and to enlighten and motivate the Indian Community.

For this purpose a committee
Sant Shri Morari Bapu Ram Katha Committee 1988  was established under the chairmanship of Shri Mohan Bhai Daya which included Shri Ukabhai Chibba (Vice Chairman) Shri Dinesh Bhai Tailor (Secretary) and Shri Navin Chandra Patel (Treasurere) Dhirubhai Bhavan (Asst. Secretary).

This was an important event which injected a spirit of hindu revivalism amongst the Hindus of New Zealand. A spiritually enlightening and extremely successful Shree Morari Bapu Ram Katha was delivered for nine days at Logan Cambell Centre, Greelane Rd, Auckland from 22-30 October, 1988. Sant Shree Morari Bapu blessed the Temple site on 29 th October 1988.

Ram Katha discourses greatly inspired the whole community to set a goal to finish the Temple in a short time. A land Purification Ceremony (Vishva Shanti Maha Yagana) was performed on 1 st September 1991 by Shree Vasantbhai Kantilal Shukla at 252-254 Balmoral Road, Auckland in the presence of approximately 600 devotees of which more than 101 couples participated in the Pooja. After that a Foundation Ceremony (Shila Ropan) was performed on 20 th October 1991 with devotees great enthusiasm and monetary support. The communities enthusiasm was escalated by considerable individual donations by almost 51 families. Many devotees attended the ceremony.

A time capsule was established and placed on 20 th September 1991 (Shila Ropan Day) in the Bharatiya Mandir foundation along with the following letter with the wishes of completing the Construction of this Bharatiya Mandir within a short period.

All the office bearers and the committee members, both past and present, have been torch bearers and leaders in taking this project to its finality. Their perpetual efforts and devotion is unforgettable. It is also an appreciable point to note that they set the tradition of starting and concluding all committee meetings with
 Om Shanti,  Mantra.

The efforts of all the devotees who toiled day and night for the building of the mandir will always be appreciated by all
Darshan Abhilashi  visiting the mandir. After the Pran Prathishtha Mohatasav the gates of the mandir will formally open for all the devotees. I have no doubt that for many years to come, the Bharatiya Mandir will remain a place of pilgimage for the Hindus living in New Zealand and the South Pacific.

I find this opportunity to thank the committee members and the trustees to give me the privilege for associating myself with the editing and the compiling of this book. May God Bless All.

Fund Raising
Bharatiya Mandir started as a dream in 1991 and finished as a reality in June 1993. When the houses were purchased, there were no funds on hand but with the moral and financial support of the devotees, and assistance from the National Bank of New Zealand, the committee was able to complete purchase of the properties at 252 and 254 Balmoral Road.

Fundraising was the major activity for the committee members during the initial years with the aim to freehold the purchase of the properties. Meetings were generally held on Sunday nights at homes of various committee members and always concluded with a light supper.
Those Sunday nights were enjoyable and thanks to all those lovely ladies for the supper. Under the fundraising chairmanship of Dr. Chunilal Madhav and subsequently, Dr. Chunilal Vallabh the fundraising committee excelled in the task. Different personalities achieved different results but the consistency of the husband and wife team of Ranthanji Bhai Bhikha and Vajiaben Ratanji bhai always motivated other committee members to improve their performance.

With the arrangement of the Ram Katha by Sant Shri Pujya Morari Bapu, the committee with other members of society and devotees from Pukekohe, commenced fundraising for the Katha and collected adequate funds to cover the cost of the Katha prior to its commencement. During the Katha, the idea of fundraising for the Mandir was introduced. Devotees pledged and donated generously in excess of $ 350, 000. the construction of the Mandir was delayed for number of years due to delays in obtaining the final planning approval. In hindsight, the delay unabled the construction of the building during the period recession when the building costs were very low compared to the earlier days of the property boom.

The estimated cost of the project increased as the confidence and dream of devotees expanded to build a center with facilities second to none in the South Pacific. This was only possible again due to the confidence of the committee members that the Public would fund development cost.

Fundraising activities peaked on special events and one such event was the foundation Pooja held in October 1991. A number of new donors emerged with donations of $10,000 and some upgraded their donations to $ 10,000 to participate in the wonderful and moving Shila Ropan Ceremony.

The record keeping for the fundraising was a major task. It is appropriate to acknowledge the efforts of a number of devotees who assisted behind the scene to input data in the computer system, count and deposit funds and maintain a database which had in excess of 1,300 names and addresses.

By the time the project is completed and the Mandir operational, $ 1,850, 000 will have been spent towards the cost of the acquisition of land, the construction of the building and furnishing the facilities. Land costs comprise of $ 322,000 and the balance of the cost is for planning and engineering fees, construction furnishings and murtis. At this time it is appropriate to recognize voluntary services performed by various members of the community and this has contributed towards significance saving in planning and construction costs.

Bharatiya Mandir Indian Temple (Inc.) is an incooperated society and also classified as a charitable trust by the Inland Revenue Department. This exemption ensures Bharatiya Mandir does not pay income tax on any type of income. Tax rebates can also be claimed by donors.

New Zealand Lotteries Commission provided a grant in May 1993 of $ 100,000 towards the project. This enabled Bharatiya Mandir to reduce its debt by the same amount. The National Bank of New Zealand has been very generous in providing finance facilities at favourable interest rates. The Bank
s generous approach to funding requirements enabled the completion of the project. Now it is only a matter of time before the balance of debt of $400,000 at 31 st May 1993 and the remaining development expenditure of approximately $ 100,000 is collected and paid.

The facility is there to promote spiritual, religious, cultural, educational and humanitarian activities. Devotees will always be welcome to participate in these activities. Your continued financial support is always necessary to fund the ongoing operating expenses of the facilities.
