MESSAGE FROM THE TRUSTEES

Namaste,
Time to Think Differently – What Next?
As a result of the very exciting and informative Mochi – History and Heritage Project entitled ‘The Journey’ which outlined the migration of the Hindu Mochi community from India, to East Africa and the UK, we have provided an ideal opportunity to rethink and re-evaluate our position and place in the wider Hindu community and direction of travel over the next decade. The Project undoubtedly acted as a catalyst for contributing and establishing a dynamic forward looking BPM and the West.
In considering the above it is proposed that a programme of ‘Time to Think Differently’ is established. This will include a series of workshops and consultations with our members and other key organisations and individuals. In order for us to make informed decisions and minimise risk, for instance in any investments we make, we need to consider any factors which may impact on our community. This will include examining social trends, demographics, income streams, the changing political landscape, the place of the Gujarati Mochi and the Hindu community in a rapidly globalisation environment, etc.
The 'Time to Think Differently' Programme will enable us to debate issues affecting the Hindu Gujarati Mochi community in Birmingham and the wider factors which are likely to impact on the Hindu community. In taking this initiative forward we need to acknowledge and address both the local and national context:
Local Context – Building on Our Success
We acknowledge and celebrate our achievements for BPM with continuous progress that speaks volumes for the unwavering professionalism and commitment of the Executive, Team leaders & the members of their wider team and not least the Management Committee.   Having laid a strong and stable organisational structure, BPM is now well placed to build on its past and present achievements. The Board is delighted to pay tribute to their energy, enthusiasm and success in providing what our members have said they recognise as high levels of cultural and religious services. This report is one way of thanking everyone! The Board has to undertake fiduciary (guardian) responsibilities of all that BPM does, but its main focus this year has been the recruitment and appointment of experienced leaders resulting in the well organised and day to day management of BPM. These include for instance special projects undertaken such as the refurbishment programme (led by Shree Kishorbhai D Parmar – Vice President), the outstanding success of the History and Heritage Day (H&H Day) organised by the H&H Day Planning Group, (in particular, we pay tribute to Shree Kishorbhai V Solanki for his imaginative creation of the history of the Mochi Community and Shree Jayantibhai A Surti for researching and writing the history ‘The Journey’, the raising of substantial amount of monies for various charities and the very generous donations towards the BPM Building project Fund by our samaj, individuals and their families.
National Context – the Future of Hinduism in the UK
Modern innovations in communication mean that we are living in shrinking world. As Mochis we are living in a global village and cannot and should not live in isolation of local, regional, national or international issues which impact on us and our families. Future trends in Hinduism will impact on our community. Future trends in Hinduism will impact on our community.
From the banks of the Ganges to the cities of the UK, North America and Europe this ancient faith is on the move. The future of Hinduism - in its intellectual, political, artistic and cultural facets – has an increasingly globalised manifestation. We need to address these developments as part of our responsibility to shape the world in which we live. In addressing the Frontiers of Hinduism, for the sake of the next generation, we need to journey in the wisdom teachings to retrieve those essential insights that will guide their (young generation) response to significant contemporary challenges.
We need to ask what are the ideas, people and politics shaping the future of Hinduism in India and the diaspora? Hinduism is the oldest surviving religion, currently followed by over a billion people in the world, with a universal appeal that is too difficult to ignore. To understand the future of Hinduism, we have to understand its strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities.
Hinduism can become a dominant and vibrant religion of the world.
In learning to Think Differently, we can find solutions to the above questions.

Vrudh

B.P.M Vrudh Seva Mandal was formed in 1996. Since 1996 BPM, have organized a number of functions with lots of guest speakers. Every month they have an elderly social gathering which normally takes place on the first monday of every month, which includes seminars on keep fit and how to maintain your health. Keep fit classes for over 50's are also organized on a regular basis. The club provides services to older people from Gujarati community, Although the club meets in Sparkbrook (UK), their membership comes from across the city and into neighboring boroughs and because BPM has a Temple the members are able to worship and pray whilst at the centre

Vrudh Seva Mandal is a non profitable centre and their main aim is to get the elderly people who are isolated, depressed or disabled, away from their daily routine and socialize with other people of the same age and interests. The objectives therefore are to run the elderly dinner club more efficiently with the intentions of creating unity amongst the community and have more health, body hygiene and cultural seminars.

Look after yourself,  and enjoy life to the full. Come and join us, first Monday of every Month. Speak to Naginbhai B. Parmar at BPM.

More details can be obtained from BPM Office between 7.15 p.m. to 8.45 p.m.

Gujarati school is organized and run by a team of qualified teachers. It is open every Saturday afternoon and they provide service to all Hindus who wish to learn their mother language.

Although the school is in Sparkbrook (UK) the students come from across the city and into neighboring boroughs. The school is very active with full programme of education throughout the year and because BPM has a temple the children are able to worship and pray whilst at the school.

We take great pride in the fact that there are Gujarati classes and teaching of Hinduism at the BPM Hall. Please send your children to attend these classes.

The new term will begin in September.

For further information contact shri Nareshbhai K. Parmar
