Holy Pilgrimage - Hindu temples in Singapore
The Shree Lakshminarayan Temple was declared open on Thursday 24th April 1969. The temple is sanctuary of the spiritual values and culture of Sanatan Darm and Vedic Hindu tradition. It is a place of faith, devotion, worship, love, peace and harmony.
The temple has constantly been upgrading its facilities and services to serve the devotees better. Devotees now have a better and comfortable place for worship. Over the years the role of our temple has changed. Today the temple is not only the place of worship, but it has become an important focal point for the Hindu community to meet and interact. It fulfils the spiritual as well as the cultural needs of the society and fosters positive social values.
Temple Upgrading
Ground Breaking Ceremony - Saturday 1st March 2003
It was decided by the temple management committee that a Ground Breaking Ceremony be held where the lift be located. The date was to coincide with the Maha Shivratri Celebration. Everyone agreed that as this would enhance the image and give a higher prominence to the proposed renovation work. Shree Lakshminarayan Temple appeal to all Devotees to donate generously towards the upgrading project.
Update on Renovation Works
It gives us great pleasure to inform members that the renovation works, which involves the extension of the prayer hall at the ground level as well as installation of the lift at all the 5 levels of the temple, is progressing according to schedule.
Progress Report
Dear Members,
With your strong support and co-operation, the
temple has seen good progress over the last few years.
The air-conditioning and extending of the
prayer hall has made it possible to accommodate an additional 200
devotees.
Lift installation serving all the 5 stories
of the temple building is a boon to our older devotees.
The most rewarding and fulfilling development was
the installation of the ‘Shivling’. Our temple is now ‘sampuran’ (complete).
These achievements could not have been possible
without the support of every member in – Monetary contribution, devotion of
valuable time or simply giving us moral support. On behalf of the Management
Committee we thank one and all.
At the AGM held in 2004, members have once again
given the Management committee the responsibility and the Mandate of upgrading
the 3rd, 4th and 5th levels of the temple.
The 3rd level was created to a fully
air-conditioned Multi- Function Hall. This hall now facilitate members’ needs
in organizing social and cultural activities.
At the 5th level the cooking area is
being upgraded. All gutters, drainage pipes etc will be upgraded (they have not
been upgraded since 1965 when the temple was built.).
Please accept our heartfelt thanks and prayers that
Bhagawan Shree Lakshminarayan blesses each and every one.
Yours in the service of Bhagawan Shree Lakshminarayan.

Yoga
Yoga Defined
The word 'Yoga' comes from a Sanskrit root 'Yuj' which means 'to join'. In its spiritual sense, it is the process by which the identity of the individual soul and the Supreme Soul is realized by the Yogi. The human soul is brought into conscious communion with the Divine Reality. Just as camphor melts and becomes one with fire; just as a drop of water when it is thrown into the ocean, becomes one with the ocean; the individual soul, when it is purified, when it is freed from lust, greed, hatred and egoism, when it becomes pure (Sattvic), becomes one with the Supreme Soul. The science that teaches the way of acquiring this occult knowledge is called 'Yoga Sastra'.Yoga, in a generic sense, refers to Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Laya Yoga or Kundalini Yoga. In a restricted sense, it means the Ashtanga Yoga or Raja Yoga of Patanjali Maharishi only.
The word Yoga is also applicable in a secondary sense to all those factors and practices that are conducive to the final achievement or fulfillment of Yoga, and as such indirectly lead to final freedom or perfection. Similarly, though the one who has reached the final Asamprajnata Samadhi or union with Reality is called a Yogi, one who is attempting to get perfection in Yoga is also called a Yogi.
Yoga philosophy is one of the six systems of Hindu philosophy. Unlike so many other philosophies of the world, it is a philosophy that is wholly practical. Yoga is an exact science based on certain immutable Laws of Nature. It is well known to people of all countries of the world interested in the study of East civilization and culture, and is held in awe and reverence as it contains in it the master-key to unlock the realms of Peace, Bliss, Mystery and Miracle. Even the philosophers of the West found solace and peace in this Divine Science. Jesus Christ himself was a Yogi of a superior order, a Raja-Yogi indeed. The founder of the Yoga Philosophy, Patanjali Maharishi, was not only a Philosopher and a Yogi, but a Physician as well. He is said to have lived about three hundred years before Jesus Christ.
Yoga is that state of Absolute Peace wherein there is neither imagination nor thought. Yoga is control of mind and its modifications. Yoga teaches us how to control the modifications of the mind and attain liberation. It teaches us how to transmute the unregenerate nature and attain the state of Divinity. It is the complete suppression of the tendency of the mind to transform itself into objects, thoughts, etc. Yoga kills all sorts of pain, misery and tribulation. It gives you freedom from the round of births and deaths, with its concomitant evils of disease, old age, etc., and bestows upon you all the Divine Powers and final liberation through super-intuitional knowledge.
Equanimity is Yoga. Serenity is Yoga. Skill in actions is Yoga. Anything by which the best and the highest in life can be attained is also Yoga. Yoga is thus all-embracing, all-inclusive and universal in its application leading to all-round development of body, mind and soul.
Yoga is primarily a way of life, not something which is divorced from life. Yoga is not forsaking of action, but is efficient performance in the right spirit. Yoga is not running away from home and human habitation, but a process of moulding one's attitude to home and society with a new understanding. Yoga is not a turning away from life; it is spiritualization of life.
Yoga is Universal
Yoga is for all. Yoga is universal. It is not a sectarian affair. It is a way to God and not a creed. The practice of Yoga is not opposed to any religion or any sacred Church. It is purely spiritual and universal. It does not contradict anyone's sincere faith.
Yoga is not a religion, but an aid to the practice of the basic spiritual truths in all religions. Yoga can be practised by a Christian or a Buddhist, a Parsee, a Muslim, a Sufi or an atheist.
To be a Yogi means to abide continuously in God and to live at peace with men. Yoga is union with God. Yoga is union with all. God dwells in all.
Benefits of Yoga Practice
Life today is full of stress and strain, of tension and nervous irritability, of passion and hurry. If man puts into practice a few of the elementary principles of Yoga, he would be far better equipped to cope with his complex existence.Yoga brings in perfection, peace and lasting happiness. You can have calmness of mind at all times by the practice of Yoga. You can have restful sleep. You can have increased energy, vigour, vitality, longevity and a high standard of health. You can turn out efficient work within a short space of time. You can have success in every walk of life. Yoga will infuse in you new strength, confidence and self-reliance. The body and mind will be at your beck and call.
Yoga brings your emotions under control. It increases your power of concentration at work. Yoga discipline gives poise and tranquillity and miraculously rebuilds one's life. The Yoga way of life deepens man's understanding and enables him to know God and his relationship with Him.
Yoga leads from ignorance to wisdom, from weakness to strength, from disharmony to harmony, from hatred to love, from want to fullness, from limitation to infinitude, from diversity to unity, and from imperfection to perfection. Yoga gives hope to the sad and forlorn, strength to the weak, health to the sick and wisdom to the ignorant.
Through Yogic discipline, mind, body and the organ of speech work together harmoniously. For a Yoga practitioner, a new outlook, a new health, a new awareness and a new philosophy rush in and vividly transform his life.
Lust for power, material greed, sensual excitement, selfishness, passion for wealth and lower appetites have drawn man from his true life in the spirit into the materialistic life. He can regain his lost divine glory if he practices, in right earnest, the principles of Yoga. Yoga transmutes animal nature into divine nature and raises him to the pinnacle of divine glory and splendour.
Messeges
It is a matter of great pleasure that as in the
past we are celebrating Shree Krishna Janmashtami on a very grand scale this
year. The celebration coincides with the partial completion of the extension
and the renovations of our Temple. Therefore, this year we are having our
celebrations in the newly renovated and extended Prayer Hall which would be
able to accommodate many more number of the devotees. In conjunction with the renovations and the celebration of Shree Krishna Janmashtami, the temple is publishing a Souvenir Magazine under the chairmanship of Shri Iswardass Sharma, our temple Senior Adviser and Past President.
The temple has also organised the cultural evening "Pushpanjali" at Victoria Theatre on 16th August 2003. The proceeds of the event are going towards the renovation fund.
Since this extension and the renovations project is one of the largest project we ever had in last many years and involves huge expenditure. I would humbly request all devotees to donate generously towards this noble cause.
I sincerely thank all devotees, donors, well-wishers and all those who in one way or another have contributed to make tonight's celebration a grand success.

Shree Lakshminarayan Temple
The Shree Lakshminarayan Temple has come a long way since it was made accessible to the devotees on the 24th April, 1969.
This year another milestone has been achieved with the approval from the authorities to extend the existing Prayer Hall to accommodate the growing number of devotees patronizing the Temple. Installation of lift covering all the floors of the Temple is for the convenience of the devotees.

Our Guest of Honour for this year, Mr. Inderjit Singh, MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, played a Pivotal role in facilitating this up-grading project. On behalf of the Management Committee, I would like to thank Mr. Inderjit Singh.
This year marks the 34th year of Mohatsav Shree Krishna Janmashtami Celebration in the Temple. This event is celebrated by all Hindus with great Enthusiasm and Devotion.
On behalf of the Management Committee. I wish to thank all devotees who have in one way or another participated in the various Temple activities. The Management Committee will in the future embark on more Religious, Social and Cultural activities.

SATISH KUMAR SHARMA
Shree Lakshminarayan Temple
On this joyous and auspicious occasion, as Hindus all over the world celebrate Krishna Janmashtami, it gives me great pleasure in conveying my heartiest felicitations to the members and devotees of the Shree Lakshminarayan Temple.
As we take on the new and varied challenges that confront us in this Millennium, it is essential that we continue to recognize the relevance of religion and the paramount role it plays in the promotion of peace, love and harmony. In a multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-religious country like Singapore, these attributes can never be over-emphasized, and every effort must be made to constantly enhance and uphold them.
Therefore, in a world that otherwise seems obsessed with materialistic gains, it is critical that the values, morals and cultural traditions handed down by our forefathers are not lost but passer on with Treat care and reverence, from one generation to the next. Only then can we be assured that a world of tranquility and harmony w-I, prevail for cur children and their successors.
In this regard, I am glad to note that the activities of the Shree Lakshminarayan Temple are focused towards the fulfillment of such noble objectives and conducted in a very commendable manner.
On behalf of the management & members of Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SICCI), I would like to congratulate the management committee and devotees of Shree Lakshminarayan Temple, for their selfless efforts and total dedication towards service to the community as well as nation building.
God Bless.
