The Singapore Dakshina Bharata Brahmana Sabha, Singapore

10 Jalan Besar, No.10-11 Sim Lim Tower, Singapore 208787
SDBBS Eka Dina Koti Nama Parayanam 11/Jan/2014 -
About the Sabha
Singapore Dakshina Bharatha Brahmana Sabha (SDBBS) was formed in 1924 to fulfill primarily the religious needs of the small Brahmin community. The Sabha also provided an avenue for the members to interact socially. The Sabha was formally registered in 1949 under Societies Act when its activities were revived after a brief period of disruption during World War II.
Sabha's Sadhabhishegam was celebrated during the period 2004-2005.
SDBBS has been one of the pioneer organizations of its kind to be established in this part of the world. The Sabha has regular events all round the year, engaging in promoting Vedic culture amongst people all over the country and abroad. Activities include organising pujas for various festivities and occasions, conducting Veda classes, promoting arts and involving in public services by rendering assistance to several organisations and temples. Sabha is also building the spirit among the young to carry on the legacy and safeguard the culture
It is heartening to note that from a humble beginning with a handful number of members in Singapore, Sabha has witnessed a steady increase in its membership all these years. The steadfast support from the members has kept Sabha's activities growing in multifarious ways. There is always a great demand from the many temples in Singapore to provide assistance to their religious events like Laksharchana, Koti archana, Maha Rudram, etc.
The Sabha employs well-qualified Purohiths from India to assist the members in performing various Poojas, rituals or ceremonies either at their residence or business premises or in a public place. The purohiths also conduct regular Vedha and Sloka classes, which are quite popular and are now being held at various centres in Singapore. The purohiths also provide Vaideeka assistance to members residing in neighbouring countries such as Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia
Major events of the Sabha are Sastha Preethi - held ususally on January 1st every year, Chandi Homam and Krithika Mandala Vedha Parayanam. Aadi & Thai Velli Poojas, Pournami poojas, Surya Namaskaram on Aavani Sundays, Sri Rama Navami, Maha Sivarathiri are some of the other regular events held. The Krithika Mandala Vedha Parayanam is hosted and conducted at the residences of 44 members, every year. Under Education Merit Award Scheme, children of the members who have achieved excellence in the landmark examinations, such as PSLE, GCE-O, GCE-A, Polytechnic or University level, are honoured at the annual Sastha Preethi function.
Additional key events completed during the Sadhabhishegam year 2004-2005:

Pournami - the day of full moon - is sacred for Hindus and almost every Pournami day is associated with another major festival like Thai Poosam, Maasi Makam, Panguni Uthiram etc. On the evening of Pournami, poojas are performed to a few important deities - the most prominent two being Ambal and Satyanarayana.
Sabha has been conducting Pournami Pooja for last 18 years continuously devoted to Ambal. While there are several legends to bring forth the benefits of reciting Lalitha Sahasranamam on the evening of Pournami, Sabha can quote from its own experience too. It may be observed that the venues used by Sabha in the past have attained great magnificence necessitating Sabha to undergo the pleasant inconvenience of finding a new location every few years. As we now have our own premises, the Pournami Pooja will be held at Veda Nivas every month.

A review of dakshina rates was undertaken as it was last done about 5 years back. The review was also necessitated by the following factors. The availability of good quality vedic priests in India having undergone full Veda Adhyayanam satisfactorily and willing to relocate to Singapore for few years leaving behind the family in India and forsaking the conveniences of home stay. Further the working hours here are non-standard and there is no pool of multi level skilled vadhyars for back up to share the responsibility.

The reasonable expectations of the priests to be economically benefited by coming to Singapore like anyone of us, commensurate with all the sacrifices and compromises they make. For information, the dakshina rates in comparable cities in India have gone up in the last few years and this need to be factored in too.

To ensure that Singapore continues to remain as the preferred overseas destination for qualified and experienced priests Dakshina rates have been rationalized and revised after due deliberation and consideration. It may observed that rates for the regular events broadly remain unchanged while some others have been grossed up to include the ancillary ceremonies attendant with the main function. There have been some upward revsion in respect of a few ceremonies / functions  with a view to align them with the rates in India. You will also find the nominal values of various dhanams to be given in selected major functions as a guideline, thus streamlining the dhanam component and ensure transparency.

The amount indicated as Dakshina and Dhanams is the MINIMUM payable to the priests, EXCLUDING transportation (Taxi fare to and fro).  Members who are endowed are encouraged to be more LIBERAL and pay the priests as they deem fit over and above the indicated figure.

Priests will issue receipts for the full amount of Dakshina paid by the members. However, no receipt will be given for (i) amount given in lieu of dhanam (ii) reimbursement of taxi fare (iii) Brahmana Dakshina in sradhdha karma.

We thank all the members for their patronage to the Sabha's core activity , i.e. Vadhyar services and look forward  to your continued support  of purohiths for conduct of ceremonies / functions and learning our scriptures  and we encourage members to propagate,  the availability of top notch priests to perform various religious ceremonies, in their social circles.
