About Us
The
objective of the Niagara Hindu Samaj is to provide devotional and cultural
services to followers of two great and ancient belief systems, Hinduism and
Jainism. The Samaj also serves the greater Niagara community through its many
programs and service offerings.
What we do
The
Niagara Hindu Samaj has raised funds for the relief of disaster-stricken people
in various parts of the world, notably Haiti, Sri Lanka, India, and Japan. It
consistently supports local food banks too.
Cultural
Awareness
We
have organized, sponsored and supported several cultural events dedicated to
broadening the cultural horizons of the Niagara community.
Health Awareness
The
Samaj has organized several events geared at disseminating knowledge relating
to health matters to the Niagara community. Topics include cancer & diabetes
The Niagara Hindu Samaj exemplifies the courage and
determination of the members of the Hindu and Jain communities in the Niagara
region.
Beginning
in the mid-eighties, community members would meet at each others’ homes over
the weekend to pray and worship together. Festivals used to be celebrated
either at the homes of community members or at rented venues.
This
period marked the establishment of the Niagara Hindu Samaj as a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to the task of raising awareness of Hinduism and
Jainism within the mainstream community.
Founder and
Visionary
Outstanding
visionary, scholar and true karmayogi, Dr. Udayan P. Rege was Professor of
Finance at Brock University in St. Catharines. He was gifted with exemplary
leadership skills, vision and compassion. Under his stewardship, the Niagara
Hindu Samaj grew from a fledgling organization to a well-established entity
representing the interests of the Hindu and Jain communities in the Niagara
Region.
During
the late nineties, Dr. Rege galvanized the community to action. Inspired by his
vision, community members gathered courage enough to dream. Very shortly
thereafter, the collective dream came true with the establishment of the Shiv
Mandir (Temple) in 1999 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Dr.
Rege passed away in January 2000 after a long and valiant battle with
cancer. He is fondly remembered by the community that he served so well.
Priest’s message:
Welcome to the Shiv Mandir! Established by the
Niagara Hindu Samaj in August 1999 in response to community needs, the Shiv
Mandir (Temple) is virtually a haven of peace and spirituality.
The Shiv Mandir is home to Lord Shiva as well as a
wide range of deities sacred to the Hindu and Jain traditions. I have
heard many visitors to the Shiv Mandir tell me that what impresses them most
about the Mandir is the sheer power of the divine vibrations from these deities
they always experience every time they visit.
I invite you to visit the Shiv Mandir to experience
this for yourself! May Lord Shiva (Bhagwan Shivji) grant you peace, harmony and
bliss! Hari Om!
